Sliding Genioplasty surgery is a type of chin augmentation that can help with snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The procedure is also known to dramatically improve the balance, proportion and harmony of a patient’s facial features.
In addition to those with sleep apnea, candidates for Sliding Genioplasty surgery may include those with birth defects such as protrusion of the chin, malocclusions (misaligned teeth), an aging neck, or a broken jaw.
What does Sliding Genioplasty surgery involve?
Sliding Genioplasty surgery involves cutting the patient’s own bone of the chin, advancing it forward, and using special titanium plates to secure the bone. Some of the muscles of the tongue attach to this bone, which allows the tongue to be advanced forward a bit, subsequently creating the space needed for the patient to breathe more comfortably throughout the night.
When performed by an experienced, board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon, the Sliding Genioplasty procedure is considered to be extremely safe and efficient. The simple procedure is done on an outpatient basis.
Following the procedure, our team at NYC SleepWell will provide detailed instructions on post-surgical care and follow-up. Normal activities may be resumed soon after the surgery, although some swelling and numbness of the lip and chin may last for a few days or a few weeks.
Is Sliding Genioplasty surgery the same as a chin implant?
No. Since a chin implant is merely placed over the bone of your chin, it does nothing to improve your airway. The chin implant deals with a completely different anatomical area and is for cosmetic improvement only. On the other hand, Sliding Genioplasty surgery is known to enjoy a high success rate in treating snoring and sleep apnea.
